Manchester United’s £30m summer signing Luke Shaw has reacted to comments made by new manager Louis van Gaal…
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw came in for some heavy criticism from his new manager Louis van Gaal recently, but the teenager has finally had a chance to voice his thoughts on his manager’s comments, reports the Daily Star.
Having been signed for a whopping £27m from Southampton this summer, the new Manchester United manager slammed the youngster for turning up to pre-season unfit.
Van Gaal gave Shaw an individual training regime, forcing him to train on his own and said, “Luke needs to be fit and he’s not very fit. He can’t perform how I want.”
There were reports that suggested that Louis van Gaal didn’t rate Shaw at all, and that the Englishman was a transfer target from the previous administration that the Dutchman had no interest in.
After working hard to recover from a hamstring injury however, Shaw seemed to win over his new boss, with van Gaal even having some praise for the starlet, calling him “an example” for his attitude in training.
Shaw responded, “For him to say I’m an example at a massive club like this is something to be really happy about.”
“He was right to say what he said about me in pre-season.”
“We had a discussion then and the plan for me was to get my fitness up. It worked, apart from the injury.”
“It was a bit of setback but I’ve worked hard in the last weeks and had some talks. He’s been a great inspiration to me and hopefully I can carry that on.”
Shaw made his debut for the club in the recent 2-1 win over West Ham, and while there were a number of other incidents that stole the spotlight from the youngster, he performed admirably for the struggling Red Devils.
Defence has been a real problem for United so far this season, so if van Gaal can rely on Luke Shaw at left-back that will be a huge boost for the Dutch manager. With centre-backs in short supply at the moment he will need Marcos Rojo to fill in, the Argentine being his only other real option on the left.
