Finally, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State on Sunday unveiled its gubernatorial candidate Senator Simeon Ajibola. Ajibola’s election as PDP flag bearer in the 2015 governorship in the state had been subject of controversy.
But the controversy seemed to have been resolved as the party’s chairman, Iyiola Oyedepo formally introduced him to the public at a news conference in Ilorin, the state capital. Three of former 10 gubernatorial aspirants of the party- Prof. Shuaib AbdulRaheem, Deacon John Dara and Architect Kale Belgore were also in attendance.
The PDP candidate also unveiled Hon. Yinka Aluko as his running mate, saying Aluko’s emergence was divine just like his. Ajibola, who formally accepted to run as the PDP governorship flag bearer said the PDP would defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 election. He commended the aspirants for conceding position to him, declaring that he was not the best among the contestants but his emergence was the wish of God Almight. “The victory at the primaries is not only for me; but is for all of us who decided or dared to put ourselves forward for public service in our effort to rescue Kwara.
“I hereby plead with you all to put personal interests aside; respect the decision of the delegates and above all remind ourselves all our pledges and promises to work together for the success of the party”, Ajibola said. Aluko equally accepted the position promising to be loyal to the candidate. The PDP Chairman, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo said despite the crisis over the outcome of the primaries, they have come out with a candidate who is not imposed.
In his remarks,Prof. Oba said contrary to the speculation that the multiple aspirants would divide the party, the party is now united. He said they are okay and satisfoed with the process that brought in Ajibola.
