President Goodluck Jonathan will, on Thursday, perform the groundbreaking of eight out of the 10 new districts marked out of the Abuja Land Swap Initiative.
Minister of the Federal Capita Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, disclosed this on Monday, explaining that the flag-off will take place in Waru District, near Apo, Abuja.
He said the groundbreaking ceremony, which starts with the provision of engineering infrastructure in the eight districts of Phase IV (South), is on the basis of the FCT initiative of leveraging on its land resource for infrastructure provision.
The minister also disclosed that the FCT was partnering with 15 investors in the provision of engineering infrastructure in the two sector centres of Phase IV.
“We estimate that this initiative will provide additional housing for more than 1,000,000 residents and will further reduce the housing deficit by about 35 per cent in the next 5 years as well as put more money in the hands of FCT Administration for human development activity, particularly in the areas of health and education”, he stated.
Pointing out that the project would further provide more than 500,000 jobs, Mohammed said the flag-off would also jump-start development in the areas to end land speculation, freezing and racketeering in Abuja.
According to him, the land swap has been strategically planned to key into the Transformation Agenda in order to drastically reduce housing deficit in the FCT.
