The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has expressed the readiness of the Commission to successfully conduct the 2019 general elections.
There have been growing fears that President Muhammadu Buhari who had deviated from tradition by appointing a person from his own ethnic group as the leader of the electoral body under his watch would comprise the results of the coming election.
But Yakubu is reassuring Nigerians that the election body would give a credible election.
The INEC boss during a media chat in Lagos on Saturday said, “We have finished planning for the 2019 elections. From now on, there is no more planning – only implementation.
The chat was preceded by an almost week-long consultations with heads of security agencies, logistics experts, transport unions and other stakeholders to ensure seamless deployment of election materials and personnel for the polls.
Yakubu noted that INEC under his watch has so far conducted 186 elections and keeps improving with every succeeding poll. “We are committed to conducting the 2019 elections the same way we conducted the previous elections,” he stated.
Prof. Yakubu, however, noted that the election is not only for INEC and appealed for the cooperation of all Nigerians to make the exercise a success.
On the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State, the INEC Chairman assured that every necessary arrangement has been put in place make it a success. He disclosed that non-sensitive materials for the election have already been moved to Ekiti while the non-sensitive materials are being warehoused at the local branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
