The voting pattern of the Southeast people in the last general election came up again at the weekend with Nigeria’s deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, insisting that the people of the zone have no regrets the way they voted.
According to him, the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria will vote outgone president, Goodluck Jonathan if given the opportunity again.
Ekweremadu, who spoke to This Day at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, said the zone made up by the Ndigbo do not regret giving their voices to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election and the people would vote in the same manner even if another opportunity was given.
He said. “We have no regret; Igbos have no regret for the way they voted; if they have the opportunity tomorrow, they will do it again. We are convinced we voted rightly, and because we believe we are part and parcel of this country, we believe what we got is within our right.
“So we expect that APC should be able to accommodate the people of South-South as they form their government, because don’t forget that Buhari got about 15 million votes; we have more than 150 million Nigerians, so he is not the president of 15 million people; the rest of the people must be accommodated.”
Ekweremadu said he decided to take another shot at the position of Deputy Senate presidency when it appeared the people of South-East were being marginalised with South-South in the scheme of things.
“We decided to take a shot so that our people will be part and parcel of government so that every part of Nigeria will have a sense of belonging,” he explained.
The Deputy Senate President who is also the Speaker of ECOWAS parliament urged fellow senators and all political office holders to settle down for business to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians as the days of politics were over.
He advised the administration of President Muhamadu Buhari under the All Progressives Congress (APC) to try to accommodate all Nigerians irrespective of party and ethnic inclination.
