Spalletti believes Napoli can take advantage of Osimhen’s pace and finishing qualities
Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti has laid out his plans to increase the number of goals that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scores.
Osimhen was on target for the Neapolitans in a 2-0 victory over Venezia on Sunday, scoring the opener in what was his first start for the club since he fractured his cheekbones in November 2021.
Whilst praising the 23-year-old’s performance, Spalletti told DAZN that Osimhen has the quality to score more goals and the responsibility lies on his teammates to take advantage of that.
“Osimhen has the qualities and characteristics. It is we who have to improve in something to serve him,” Spalletti said.
The Italian manager then highlighted that better service and quick progression of the ball can help the Super Eagles striker trouble opposing defenders more.
Spalletti continued: “They don’t always go and dribble, we have to play the ball faster and put the defenders to go and defend on his qualities.
“In the first half, we often played on the feet, we didn’t play much in the spaces.”
Spalletti believes that instead of trying to dribble past opponents, Napoli players can knock the ball straight up to Osimhen to take advantage of the former Lille man’s pace.
“If, on the other hand, before dribbling and forcing them to go down, you immediately hit the ball behind the central player, he goes to take advantage of his characteristics even if they are long balls,” the Napoli manager concluded.
Osimhen will be instrumental for Napoli in their next Serie A clash as they go up against Inter Milan in a fight for who tops the table.
