Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State was on Thursday attacked by gunmen suspected to political thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party.
The governor was on door-to-door campaign in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state when the gunmen fired gunshots at him.
Amaechi, who is the Director General of is the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, is fighting a battle of his life to deliver Rivers State, which considered part of the home base of the PDP presidential candidate President Goodluck Jonathan, to his party.
Two members of the APC were said to have been seriously injured during the incident, which happened at about 6pm.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, David Iyofor, confirmed this development. Iyofor said the thugs threw bottles, stones and other dangerous objects at Amaechi and his entourage.
He said: “This evening, gunshots were fired at the Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area by PDP thugs. “Obio/Akpor is the home of the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Nyesom Wike. The thugs attacked the governor and his entourage with bottles, stones and various dangerous objects.
Then gunshots were fired at the governor. “When the governor was leaving the community, bonfire was set up on the road to prevent him from leaving. More gunshots were fired at his convoy.
