The Nigerian Army has reportedly retired Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh over his role in the last governorship election in Ekiti State in 2014.
Soldiers sent to provide security during the election, in which the incumbent governor of the state posted a resounding victory over the former governor Kayode Fayemi, were alleged to have aided the victory Fayose. Fayose ran on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, the then ruling party.
The All Progressives Congress Federal Government has made much issues of an alleged video which was to have captured how the soldiers were used in carrying out the rigging.
But what is intriguing about the whole allegation is that the PDP had won all the elections conducted in Ekiti State even after the alleged manipulated election.
Minister of Defence, Dan Ali, said the plan to end General Momoh’s military career in line with the report of the military panel that investigated Ekiti election bouhaha.
He spoke in an interview in Washington, DC.
Ali was in the US as part of the Nigerian delegation to a nuclear power summit convened by President Barack Obama of the United States of America.
The army, the minister said, had decided to initiate the process of rusticating General Momoh, who was indicted last year by a military panel.
General Momoh led a contingent of soldiers and other security agencies, to Ekiti State and reportedly intimidated voters and inhibited the movement of officials of the All Progressives Congress.
This strategy was reportedly approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan to enable Fayose , to defeat the then incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi.
A former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, was allegedly used as a conduit to transfer huge sums of money for the election.
