Pandemonium broke out among the maintenance staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, when fire broke out in Room 304, Block A, Moremi Hall of the university on Wednesday morning. The raging inferno consumed books, clothes, matresses, food stuff and electronic gadgets before it was put out by the institution’s fire fighters, thereby curbing it from spreading to other rooms in the block. The fire, which occurred at about 11am in the female hostel, according to sources, is the second in the university this year. It will be recalled that similar incidents occurred at the Awo Hall of the institution while the students were on holiday early this year. Yesterday’s incident occurred when most of the occupants of Moremi Hall had gone home for the harmattan semester holiday. The cause of the fire outbreak could not be ascertained, but an eye witnesses disclosed that it could be due to a power surge that might have occurred immediately the school’s electricians rectified the fault that had affected supply of electricity to the hall. Normalcy has since returned to the hall at the time of filing this story.
