Finally, the Federal Government has successfully shut out the transmission of Radio Biafra by taking the frequency on the shortwave.
By Saturday through to the Sunday the station was transmitting a recorded message from the government to the audience of the station, which was allegedly used to transmit hateful information against the Nigerian state.
Reports indicate that the Radio Biafra’s broadcast on Monday will be the last.
According to the reports, one of the presenters on the station made it clear that the station was being wound down. The voice says, “This Is Radio Biafra Closing Down Forever.”
Several attempts in the past to block the transmission of the radio’s signals within Nigeria’s boundaries were unsuccessful, as it appeared that the operators of the station resorted to Internet channels to beat government moves..
The station which operates on 15560 kHz in the 19 meter band shortwave from 7pm-9pm Nigerian time was taken over with Nigerian military martial music playing ,extoling the gallant and heroic antecedents of the Nigerian military from world war 2 to Liberia,Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bakasi among others, according to a report in Newsdairyonline..
The 2 -hour programme was frequently punctuated by an Igbo female announcer called Nkemdidi Chukwumeka, denouncing MASSOB and IPOB while also declaring Ndigbo support and loyaly to Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The announcements are in both English and Igbo.Immediately following the announcemnts are Hausa music calling for peaceful coexistence, and saluting PMB and the armed forces. It also called for an end to Boko Haram and death of Biafra, which died 45 yrs ago,”the listener said.
The online platform said the details of the shutting down of the radio were sketchy, but that sources close to the military told its correspondent on condition of anonymity it was made possible by an elite team of special operations, which successfully infiltrated the Pro Biafra organisations abroad and provided the Nigerian Security with critical intelligence for the success of the operation.
