THE Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the award of contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of 17 roads and bridges across the country under categories A&B under the 2014 budget implementation .
According to the the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Dr. Steve Oruh, the roads and bridges are located in Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Nasarawa, Abia, Niger, Kogi, Cross River, Lagos and Kaduna all worth N430,564,974,946.72.
Oruh, briefed journalists along with his other colleagues in the Ministries of Works; Mike Onolememen; Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed and Nurudeen Mohammed, Supervising Information, disclosed that Council also approved the request of the Niger Delta Affairs Dr. Steve Oruh seeking approval for the variation cost on the contract for the construction of Gbaregolor-Ogriagbene Road in Delta State from the original contract sum of N7,348,355,298.50 to the revised total cost of N8,560,796,627.25
Oruh also presented a memo to seek Council’s approval for the award of contract for engineering supervision of the construction of East-West Road, Section V ( Oron-Calabar) Phase 1 in Akwa Ibom/ Cross River States. The contract was awarded in favour of Messrs Siraj ( Nigeria) Limited in the sum of N661.3 million with a completion period of 60 months. He said there is a budgetary provision of N1.4 billion in the 2014 Appropriation Act in the sum of $500,000,000.00 being expected from China EXIM Bank for the project.
According to Oruh, the objective of the road projects would be to open more riverine communities and improve their economic and commercial activities thereby improving the standard of living of the people. It will also create more job opportunities for youths and address youth restiveness in the region.
He said that no fewer than 300 artisans and 15 professionals in the field of engineering and administration were to be engaged on the project. There is a provision of N2.2billion in the 2014 appropriation for this project. “After deliberations, council considered and approved the variation cost in the sum of N1,212,461,328.75 on the contract for the construction of Gbaregolor-Ogriagbene Road in Delta State from the original contract sum of N7,348,335,298.50 to the revised total cost of N8,560, 796,627.25 in favour of Messrs Setraco Nigeria Limited with a completion period of six months.
The details of the projects include; Rivers (N1206billion); Bayelsa (N26.4billion); Delta (N64.8billion); Delta (N47.9billion); Enugu (N32.3billion); Abia and Rivers (N34billion) and Ogun (N100billion). Others are Niger (N17.5billion); Bridge in Cross River (N6.5billion);Yobe and Borno (N8.1billion); Kaduna and Zamfara (N15.6billion); Nasarawa (N14.2billion); Benue (N9.9billion); Kogi (N7.4billion); Gombe (N7.2billion); Cross River (N7billion) and Cross River (N9billion).
There were budgetary provisions of N11 billion in the Ministry’s 2014 Appropriation and N10billion from SURE-P for the projects, while the balance will be provided for in subsequent budgets.
