The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday, laid foundation for the construction of 40,000 housing units for workers in Abuja.
The multi-billion naira housing projects, which are located on 329.93 hectares of land in Lugbe District and 298.59 hectares in Apo Taphi District of the FCT, are being done in partnership with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and some private developers.
The housing projects have the capacity of alleviating the suffering encountered by workers in the Federal Capital Territory.
During the occasion, the minister recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan personally gave the FCT Administration marching orders to initiate a viable housing scheme to cater for the needs of Nigerian workers who are the engine of the country’s economy.
Mohammed noted that the projects would contribute greatly to the reduction of the housing deficit in Abuja and Nigeria, adding that the projects have been designed in a manner that would ensure affordability by the workers.
According to him, the construction process would also provide jobs for over 7,000 skilled and unskilled Nigerians, which will go a long way to reducing unemployment.
The minister, at the occasion, directed the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to immediately commence arrangement to provide basic infrastructure to the site in line with the instructions of the Jonathan.
