Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into confusion by two contradictory court orders on the November 1, 2014 ward congress of the party.
Following a suit filed by some people who claimed that they were elected delegates through the congress, an order was given by an Abuja High Court restraining anybody, including the party, from tampering with the ward congress in Enugu.
However, on Thursday, an Enugu High Court, presided over by the State Chief Judge, Justice Innocent Umezulike, granted a counter-order restraining PDP from acting on any list or names purporting to be the list of delegates elected on November 1 at any ward or local government congress of the party in the state.
Saturday Independent reliably gathered that the party has been thrown into confusion by the two court orders, coming less than two weeks to the commencement of primary elections.
The primaries are expected to start with the House of Assembly election on November 29, while those for the House of Representatives, Senate and governorship would hold on December 6, 7 and 8 respectively.
An aspirant for the House of Representatives who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the two contradictory court orders have left him in a dilemma.
“As I speak with you now, I don’t know which way to go. Ordinarily, we should be meeting with the delegates by now, canvassing for their support. We know the statutory delegates, like political and party office holders, but I don’t think there is any provision in the PDP constitution that allows the statutory delegates alone to vote at primaries.
“It is the PDP constitution that provided for three-man delegates and they constitute majority of the voters at the primaries.
And now one court is saying that the delegates’ list should not be tampered with and another one is telling the party not to accept the list. We don’t know which way to go,” the source said.
