A plane carrying hundreds of passengers was forced to make an emergency landing in Tokyo after at least 14 people were injured during turbulence.
American Airlines flight AA280 from Seoul to Dallas was diverted to Japan’s Narita airport following the mid-air scare over the Pacific Ocean
Citing the transportation ministry, Kyodo News agency said the plane was carrying 240 passengers and 15 crew members, and the incident caused only minor injuries.
Twitter user Erin Cherry wrote: “Landed in Tokyo after massive, massive turbulence on #aa280. Broken glass etc flying inside cabin. Some were injured.”
American Airlines said: “American’s primary concern at this time is for our passengers and crew on board the airplane and our team in Narita is providing assistance.”
US TV network the Weather Channel said the turbulence that hit the plane was the result of winds of up to 150mph.
Those winds were caused by low pressure which is expected to become a so-called “weather bomb” as it makes landfall on Japan’s most northerly islands
