President Goodluck Jonathan has received the critical endorsement of the pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, for his re-election bid.
The Yoruba people of Nigeria live in the six southwestern states of OGUN, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo and Oyo, and their votes will be critical to who clinches the presidency in February 14 election.
Afenifere endorsed Jonathan on Tuesday after a meeting between the group and Jonathan at the residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasonranti, in Akure, Ondo State.
Speaking with reporters, Jonathan, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the election, said he was at Fasoranti’s residence to pay homage to the Afenifere leader.
Also speaking after the meeting, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, said: “This is the first time Afenifere will be endorsing any President.”
The spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said after the meeting: “Afenifere supports the President’s reelection because he had the courage to convoke the national conference and we hope that he will implement the report.
“The President expressed the commitment that he will adopt the report within 12 months of returning to office.”
If there endorsement translates to real votes, Jonathan will easily be coasting to victory as his strong areas of South south, South East, Middle Belt and northern minorities are coalescing around him again.
