The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it has arrested the former Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Mr. Lawal was arrested Wednesday, Channels Television reported.
EFCC Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Samin Amaddin confirmed Babachir’s arrest.
Mr. Lawal is detained in the Abuja headquarters of the EFCC where he will face investigators over his role in the controversial contracts.
Reno Omokri, former aide to ex president Goodluck Jonathan, said the arrest of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation was a ploy by Buhari’s government to distract Nigerians from the truth in Obasanjo’s letter, listing APC failures.
The stark critic of Buhari’s administration on his twitter page wrote “The EFCC has detained Babachir Lawal, immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This is so knee jerk predictable!
“I predicted yesterday that going by their antecedents, the Buhari admininistration will take a dramatic decision to try to distract from Obasanjo’s letter.”
Mr. Lawal was recently sacked after he was indicted by a presidential panel that investigated misuse of funds meant for people displaced by Boko Haram.
He had earlier been indicted by the Senate.
His arrest is coming a day after former President Olusegun Obasanjo accused Mr. Buhari of condoning corruption where persons close to him are involved.
Mr. Obasanjo said in a statement that the president had failed woefully, and urged him not to seek re-election.
