ABAKALIKI – THE primary election to elect Peoples Democratic Party, PDP State House of Assembly candidates for the 2015 general election was peacefully conducted across the state.
The election which was supervised by the PDP state Electoral Panel sent from the National Secretariat of the party distributed the electoral materials to all the Returning Officers in each local government areas of the state amid tight security in Abakaliki.
The materials were distributed in the presence of security operatives, PDP delegates, Returning Officers and party supporters as no act of violence was recorded throughout the exercise.
Recall that the Governor Martin Elechi had in a function at the government House on Friday emphasized that the PDP primaries will not hold in the state since the National Working Committee was yet to rectify the anomalies that occurred during the last PDP Ward Delegate election in the state.
Speaking with newsmen, the leader of the team and Chairman of the Panel, Senator Ben Collins Ndu said they were in the state to conduct the State House of Assembly primary election even as he debunked the insinuations in some quarters that the election was postponed.
“If the election was postponed we wouldn’t have been here; we came from the National Secretariat of the party. We are members of the State House of Assembly Panel for the conduct of the election.
“We are comfortable were we are; We appreciate your presence and will be fair to all persons. We want them to conduct themselves peacefully;I pray God to see us through”.
Other members of the team include: Hon. Aliyu Bindawu secretary, Hon. Sani Aminu, Rt. Hon. Simon Dogari, and Hajiya Yelwa sani.
In his remarks, the Acting State PDP Chairman, Chief Onwe Joseph Onwe stressed that no person has the right to inform the public that the election was postponed when there was nothing like that
“I call on our party faithful, supporters and aspirants to be calm and law abiding as the conduct of the election was going on smoothly”.
Some of the constituencies visited by our correspondent revealed peaceful conduct of the election; at Ugwuachara unit, the Returning officer was seen announcing the result of the primaries in the are
