Police detectives at the A division Police Station Asaba, Delta State, have arrested three suspected fake beggars by the River Niger bank while trying to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public at the weekend.
Reports said that the suspects, who currently helping the police at the police cell in the A division for further investigation were nabbed by police detectives acting on a tip-off about their illicit activities , including extortion under the guise of being blind.
It was reliably gathered that several unsuspecting members of the public had been hoodwinked into parting with their hard-earned money in most cases at the strategic position by the river bank where the fake beggars took their stand.
The acting police public relations officer in the state, ASP Preston Roland, confirmed that the suspects had been arrested by the police detectives who also recovered bundles of money of different denominations.
He added that upon interrogation, they claimed to have come from a neighbouring state in search of livelihood.
ASP Roland also said that the police had arrested no fewer than 13 persons in the last three weeks around the River Niger bank under the same guise of being blind, disclosing that upon investigation, it was discovered that they were not blind.
Sources said that activities of these suspects had been a security threat to residents of the area, leading to their petitioning the police.
