SAPELE – THE Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Zai-Laye Abiodun Smith has ordered the release of eight awaiting trail inmates of Sapele Prison and another inmate at the Sapele Remand Home.
Justice Smith, who has been on tour of prisons in the State, also debunked comments that the visit to the prisons was done out of sentiments to set inmates free.
He said: “We are not here to release inmates or criminals based on sentiments but we are here with open minds to do justice and as such, deserving ones will be released while those found wanting would be made to face the law”.
The Chief Judge while reviewing the case file of over three hundred cases ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape, amongst others, said the release of the inmates was done in accordance with the law based on legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP.
Those who were released include inmates with inadequate information to face trial, lack of diligent prosecution, no case to answer and persons who have no pending charge against them, while others were released based on legal advice from the DPP.
