The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, Chief Vita Abba has resigned from office.
Abba, who had nursed governorship ambition before the political stakeholders in People’s Democratic Party (PDP) settled for Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as a consensus candidate, resigned in order to contest the 2015 general elections.
Abba is now seeking election into the House of Representatives.
Abba’s resignation letter, which was dated October 20, was read and accepted at the PDP State Executive Committee meeting in Enugu on Saturday.
According to a communiqué signed by the publicity secretary, Enugu State PDP, Dr. Okey Eze, Chief Ikeje Asogwa has been appointed as the new chairman of the party, in line with article 47 (6) of the PDP Constitution.
Asogwa was a former chairman of the party in Enugu State.
The communiqué also disclosed that the Enugu State PDP executive committee commended Abba “for his meritorious and selfless service to the party and wished him well in his future endeavors.”
The committee reaffirmed the commitment of the party to line up behind Mr. Ugwuanyi.
The party “unanimously adopted Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the consensus governorship candidate of the party for the 2015 governorship election in Enugu State,” the communiqué said.
The communiqué added that the meeting deliberated extensively on several issues on how to move the party forward for the challenges ahead.
