The suspension of Mr Ibrahim Magu as acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has moved from from the realm of speculation to official announcement.
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of the anti-graft chief, who for a long time was seen as untouchable. Magu had on occasions defied the lawmakers in the National Assembly and the rejection of the confirmation of his appointment by the Senate was able to dissuade President uhari from keeping in the office.
Magu’s suspension takes immediate effect, according to a statement from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on Friday.
In the statement, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Umar Gwandu, explained that Magu’s Suspension was to allow for an unhindered inquiry by the Presidential Investigation Panel under the Tribunals of Inquiry Act and other relevant laws.
President Buhari has directed the EFCC Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar, to take charge and oversee the activities of the commission, Gwandu said.
Umar, according to the statement, will oversee EFCC’s activities pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation and further directives in that regard.
Magu along with top officials of the EFCC are being grilled by the presidential panel set up by the Presidency to investigate the activities of the anti-graft agency.
The former EFCC boss has already spent four days in police custody as he continues to attend the panel’s sitting.
