Suspected members of the dare-devil Boko Haram sect on Sunday night invaded the Nigeria Prison yard in Koton-karfe, Kogi state, where they set free all the inmates serving various terms there.
The insurgents were said to have stormed the prison around 10pm when most of the guards were not at their duty posts as most of them had gone home to pass the night when the incident occurred.
In the incident, which is the second attack on the prison by the insurgents in two years, the insurgents broke through the prison wall and free all 145 inmates of the prison.
Reports indicate that it was easy for the insurgents to break in because some prison guards usually lock up the inmates in their cells at night and go to their various homes. to sleep only to return in the morning to hand over to the next set of guards.
The state’s governor Idris Wada paid an on the spot visit to the scene on Monday.
The state controller of prison, Mr. Omale Adams, while breifing him, explained that the incident took place at about 10pm when external forces invaded the prison and overpowered his men who were on duty.
There were some unconfirmed report of deaths.
Meanwhile, some of the inmates who were freed during the invasion have return to the prison on their own accord.
