Public and private primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa State resumed on Monday for the 2014/2015 academic session with a one-day training in Yenagoa for teachers on the prevention of the Ebola Virus Disease.
The state government had early last week announced Monday, September 29, as resumption date but the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state opposed it, citing government’s shoddy preparation for any eventual outbreak of Ebola.
Our correspondent, who visited some of the schools in the state capital, observed that academic activities had started as teachers were seen teaching pupils in the classrooms.
The Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Walton Liverpool, said 540 schools from the eight local government areas of the state were participating in the one-day training.
He said buckets, soaps and Ebola testing kits, among other items, would be distributed to the schools after the training which was held at Community Secondary School, Opolo, and Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Biogbolo.
In an interview, the Administrator of Tarepet School, a private school, Abokiyah William, said private schools had organised a seminar on Ebola ahead of the resumption.
