Political parties fielding candidates for the February 14, 2015 presidential and National Assembly elections have until Thursday to submit the names of their candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This is in accordance with the provision of the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended).
Section 31 of the Act says “Every political party shall not later than 60 days before the date appointed for a general election under the provisions of this Act, submit to the Commission in the prescribed forms the list of the candidates the party proposes to sponsor at the elections.”
The election of president and members of National Assembly have been slated for the same day of February 14, which means that winners of the primary elections for the two chambers of the National Assembly would be forwarded to INEC by Thursday.
Consequently, the commission stipulates in its notice of election the deadline for the submission of the presidential and National Assembly candidates on December 18.
Both PDP and APC have already met the requirement of nominating candidates for the presidential office by December 11, as stated by INEC.
While incumbent Goodluck Jonathan and Namadi Sambo are the flag-bearers for the PDP, APC must come up with the running mate to the nominated Muhammadu Buhari before Thursday’s deadline.
