A gang of armed robbers on Wednesday morning made a daring attack two banks on Ebute Road, Ogolonto bus-stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, carting away millions in cash.
Reports cite eyewitnesses as saying said they saw at least four men who were not wearing masks loading money into a Sienna van on the road as the robbery was going on, where commercial banks are located.
The robbers, about 20 in number, arrived Ebute Ikorodu, through the waterways around 9.00am, firing sporadically.
They were said to have arrived Ogolonto, also in Ikorodu, on foot after abandoning two SUV cars which they had earlier snatched from their owners at gun point.
It was gathered that some of the robbers entered a bank, where they held both staff and customers hostage at gun point while others made for the cash till.
According to reports, robbers engaged policemen in a fierce gun battle for about 40minutes, before they escaped with their loot through the lagoon.
Witnesses said some of the robbers moved from house to house, looting property and cash. Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the robbery attack, but added that peace has been restored to the area. He noted that there was no casualty in the incident.
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago, armed bandits robbed three banks in Ikorodu.
The robbers, who stormed the area in two speed boats, shot dead two people during the operation and carted away huge sums of money.
Incidentally, there is a police station located directly opposite the bank.
On Twitter, the Nigeria Police Force said officers have responded to robbery saying:
#Ikorodu Lagos now secured after our officers responded to Bank robbery this morning. Police units remain on ground. #NPFalert #NPFtraffic
