The Lagos State Government has refuted reports that it gave approval for a restriction of movement to be placed on residents of Itire Local Government Area in the state, following the death of the Onitire of Itire, Oba Lateef Abayomi Akanbi Dauda.
Residents of the community, which is Surulere Laocal Government of Lagos State have retiring as early as 7PM when the rumour began to spread.
Earlier on Monday, residents in the area had said they received text messages from the government announcing a restriction of movement from September 19-27, 2016.
However, in a fresh statement, the State Government has denied giving an authorisation for the order.
It described the act as an illegality adding that “no individual or group has the right to infringe on the rights of citizens to freedom of movement and association as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The statement added that the state government was collaborating with security agencies to ensure that the rights of citizens are not infringed upon.
The government also commiserated with the royal family, Onitire Chieftaincy Family Council and the entire people of Itire over the demise of the monarch. (TV360 Nigeria)
