A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinsanya Sunny Ajose, on Wednesday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) committed constitutional illegality by fielding Ayo Fayose as its candidate in the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State.
According to him, the constitution stipulates a minimum of 10 years before anyone who is impeached from office can seek elective post.
“In the first instance, the presentation of Ayo Fayose as the candidate for that governorship election is abnormality. When you say somebody is impeached, it means that the person has lost credibility in the system. At least, a duration of 10 years has to elapse before he can come out to run for an election.
But somehow, the powers that be in Nigeria just feel like they can amend and re-amend the electoral process or the constitution of the country to suit their need”.
“ We are not in a banana republic. You can also see the traces, the maturity lacking in someone that wants to govern a state. On the shutting down of the courts by the Chief Judge, the courts has a right to protects its members”.
“ But I don’t know why the federal government is getting itself entangled in this kind of imbroglio at this point in time. Definitely, nobody can swear in the governor-elect without the CJ.
On the allegation by the PDP that the APC is the brain behind the crisis rocking the judiciary so as to stall Fayose’s swearing in, Ajose said the APC never instructed political thugs led by Fayose to attack judges.
“On the allegation that the CJ is acting out the script of APC, let me
make it clear that APC didn’t write the country’s constitution. APC did not ask political thugs to disrupt court proceedings and beat up judges. I expect the opposition party to face reality and stop apportioning blames,” he said.
