Rector, Cape Coast Polytechnic, Ghana, Prof. Lawrence Atepor has stressed the need for Africa to focus on exploring and developing local resources through the use of appropriate technology for the region’s technological advancement.
He stated this in the 1st Convocation Lecture of the Sokoto State Polytechnic, Sokoto with the theme: ‘Enterpreneurship Education in the Technical, Vocational Education Training (TVET) Institutions For Sustainable Development: Challenges and Prospects.’
“Unless there is a major shift in policy direction to TVET education, most African countries will remain drawers of water and hewers of wood.
“Africa must move away from the traditional education and education policies must focus on this area with adequate budget support,” he said.
He said although paper qualifications are the basic evidences and indications of one’s ability to perform a task, “there are so many Master degree holders which do not dynamically reflect on their performance,’’
Atepor however noted the challenges as surmountable and stressed that entrepreneurship education should move in tandem with TVET education.
Also speaking, Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Bashir Garba stressed the need for theory to be backed by practice.
Sokoto state Governor,Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko assured that the Sokoto government would continue to support its tertiary education institutions to effectively achieve their mandates.
Wamakko who was represented by the State Education Commissioner, Alhaji Bello Danchadi stressed the importance of education to national development.
