Police in Borno state have apprehended a 29-year old university undergraduate who specialized in car theft.
Parading the suspect, Mari Paul Dirkwa, a final year student of the Department of Business Education, University of Maiduguri to journalists on Tuesday, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Clement Adoda alleged that he confessed to have stolen six vehicles in the past.
He said Dirkwa “who specialized in the theft of motor vehicles was arrested by a team of special anti-robbery squad on patrol along Bama road Maiduguri following a tip-off while attempting to steal one green colour Honda Civic with registration number MKA 92 AH (Kaduna) property of one Ummi Mari Umar, female, of University of Maiduguri.”
Adoda said on interrogation, the suspect confessed to have previously stolen six assorted vehicles within Maiduguri metropolis and disposed off same at different locations within Borno state.
He said the police was making all possible efforts to recover the vehicles and the suspect be charged to court at the completion of investigation.
The CP however advised the general public especially car owners to be security conscious and advised installation of anti-theft security devices in their cars.
The suspect later told journalists that he took to car theft out of the urge to meet his selfish financial needs, and had since learnt his lesson and would want to be pardoned.
He revealed that the car stolen were sold at Nigeria’s border town with Cameroon, Gamboru, the cars are subsequently shipped out into the neighbouring country.
