Six people were reportedly killed while twenty three others injured in two separate auto crashes in Lagos, Wednesday night and Thursday respectively. Five persons were confirmed dead when their vehicle rammed into a stationery truck, late Wednesday, night, at Third Mainland Bridge, inward Oworonshoki area of the state, while one person died yesterday in the accident involving a Volkswagen commercial bus with 18 passengers on board which somersaulted on its way to Mile 12 from Lagos Island at Alapere inward toll-gate.
General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Mr. Micheal Akindele, who confirmed the incidents, said six victims in the Third Mainland Bridge accident, survived with injuries. According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred when a Mazda commercial bus with number plates , AKD 292 XL, coming from Aja Lekki, en route Oshodi, rammed into a broken down MAN truck at about 10.24 PM on Wednesday, at Third Mainland Bridge inward Oworonshoki area. Akindele explained that further,
“Investigation conducted by the Agency’s Emergency Response Team, ERT, at the incident scene, revealed that the commercial bus rammed into the broken down truck while on excessive speeding. “In the process, five victims (male adults) were trapped and the vehicle extricated by the ERT, their bodies recovered dead, while six other victims male adults were rescued alive with severe injuries and were taken to Accident and Emergency Centre (Trauma Centre) and Gbagada General Hospital by Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS.”
The remains of the deceased, according to him, were also evacuated by Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, to Mainland Hospital Mortuary, while the remains of the commercial bus driver was released to his family as requested through intervention of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who was present at the scene of the accident.
