Political activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has said he was shot in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, by a policewoman.
The publisher was allegedly shot during a protest at the Unity Fountain, Abuja.
But the police are disputing the report, saying that they only shot teargas canisters to disperse the crowd which alleged had purposed to disrupt public peace.
“Just been shit (sic) by a police officer, ACP Atine at the Unity Fountain in Abuja,” Sowore captioned a tweet that shows a wound on his body, adding that “Let the struggle continue even if they take my life.”
A Premium Times report citing its sources said a female police officer fired a teargas cannister at Mr Sowore who was at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for a protest.
This newspaper gathered that he sustained injuries from the shot and has been rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
PREMIUM TIMES further reported that it could not immediately ascertain the cause of the injury from the footage of the incident we saw, but that a popular lawyer and right activist, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed the development on Twitter.
Popular lawyer and right activist, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed the development on Twitter.
“@YeleSowore has just been shot by a female police officer at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
The criminal officer is said to be an ACP. I watched Sowore being shot live on Facebook.
This is what Nigeria has been turned into under Buhari. They’ve declared war on the Civic Space,” the lawyer wrote.
