Jermaine Jenas has slammed three Chelsea stars and told Frank Lampard he needs to invest in new defenders after the club’s disappointing defeat to Premier League rivals West Ham.
Lampard’s side failed to extend their gap over fifth-placed Manchester United on Wednesday evening as they sunk to a 3-2 defeat against relegation-battlers West Ham.
Jenas was critical of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso’s performances and joined the likes of Gary Neville and Steve Nicol in slamming the Chelsea trio.
Asked whether the West Ham defeat was further evidence that Chelsea need to invest in new defenders, Jenas told Match of the Day: ‘Definitely.
‘We heard Frank Lampard saying he wasn’t happy about the three goals they conceded. They got away with the first goal [which was ruled out by VAR] too because it should have stood.
‘You would have thought they would have learnt from the first goal but they don’t and they concede.
‘Christensen, I’m not sure what he’s thinking [with West Ham’s second goal]. He jumps over Michail Antonio so he knows he’s there but then he doesn’t take the care to see where he is afterwards and just runs past him.
‘With West Ham’s winner, Alonso is thinking about going forward, that’s why he doesn’t track back the way he should have.
‘And then Rudiger must be the only player in the Premier League that doesn’t know [Andriy] Yarmolenko wants to cut back inside here.
‘You have to take him down the line and give yourself a chance. He allows him to cut onto his favoured foot and he scores.’
