Edo State political drama has shifted to Act one scene two. Action at Peoples Democratic Party.
The scene is at a Federal High court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where Justice E. A. Obile has granted an order restraining the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki from participating in the Peoples Democratic Party governirship primary election.
The governor joined the PDP last week and was granted waiver by the party’s leadership to participate in the governorship primary scheduled to hold June 25.
According to court papers that surfaced overnight, ine of the party’s aspirants, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihiama had approached the court asking for the Governor, who just joined the PDP from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to be stopped from participating in the primaries.
The request of aspirant was granted by Justice Obile, who issued a restraining order against Obaseki’s participation.
The grounds of the court action include the following: the Obaseki just joined the party and that only those who purchased the forms during the stipulated window should be eligible for the primary.
Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, were granted waivers after the window.
Ogbeide-Ihama also questioned the validity of Obaseki’s certificates.
The primaries of the PDP is scheduled for June 25, while the Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the main election for September 19, 2020.
