Three suicide bombers were killed after they attempted to attack Nigerian troops at a checkpoint outside the northeastern city of Maiduguri on Friday.
One of the bombers detonated her explosives when she sighted the soldiers, killing another female accomplice, Brigadier General Lucky Irabor told reporters in the city. The final one was shot by the troops as he ran toward them, he said.
While Islamist militant group Boko Haram has been beaten back from territory it held in the northeast early last year, it continues to carry out suicide bombings and hit-and-run attacks. President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in May 2015, has made it a priority to end the insurgency.
