Some of the abducted students of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara State have been freed by their abductors, the News Agency of Nigeria is reporting.
They were abducted by heavily armed bandits numbering over a hundred in the early hours of Friday.
While the number of students recorded to have been taken away by the gunmen was put at 317, those freed as at press time were said to be 279.
Sky News reported that the “gunmen abducted 279 students from the Girls Science Secondary School in Jangebe town, Zamfara state, on Friday.”
And Dr Bello Matawalle, the state’s governor, did not give impression that any student was outstanding in the hands of the bandits.
He says the girls are “now safe”.
Sky News further reports that Lawani Adali, the security man on duty on the day, said policemen and vigilantes could not get inside because the gunmen had blocked all entrances.
He said there was heavy firing as they were shouting “Allahu akbar” – “God is great”.
According to the NAN report in the early hours of Tuesday, the freed students arrived Government House, Gusau at about 4am on Tuesday.
Governor Bello Matawalle had on Monday briefed President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa on the issue.
Matawalle had on Sunday revealed that the state knew those behind the kidnapping.
