At least 13 people were killed and 26 others injured in Zambia’s road traffic accidents during the Christmas holiday, the country’s Police Deputy Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said Friday.
Hamoonga said the country recorded 99 road traffic accidents during the holiday, indicating a reduction compared to 166 accidents recorded last year.
“Despite the reduction in the number of accidents in 2014 we have recorded an increase in the number of fatalities compared to the eight fatalities that were recorded in 2013 during the same period,” he said in a statement.
Among the causes of accidents were improper overtaking, over- speeding and improper crossing of roads by pedestrians, the official added.
The police called for people to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to avoid loss of lives.
